I am going to analyse The Inbetweeners as a single camera programme. I am looking for how the episodes are structured, what camera work was used,what editing techniques were used and what type of sound and lighting was used in this series.
What makes The Inbetweeners a single camera show?
It is a single camera show because they will film Gilberts office then they would film it looking at will and film the whole scene in this perspective. They will then film the whole scene again but this time they will film it from Gilberts perspective.
How is it produced?
Principal photography for the majority of all the episodes took place in the United Kingdom (London, West Sussex). However there were a few episodes were they went to other locations. For example when they went to Thorpe park they shot it at Thorpe Park.
What are the technical elements used?
-Camera
In the first episode there was a lot of high angles used on Will to show that he is a bit of a weak and pathetic character. This was used when Will was in the bathroom going to the toilet and then other characters started taking pictures of him. This gives the impression to the viewer that he is weak and pathetic. This then creates humour for the viewers because they are laughing at him.
Another camera shot that was used in the first episode was the two shot, this was used when Will was in the car with his mum and they were having a conversation, this is used to show the relationship between Will and his mum. This makes it quite clear that Will has an attitude towards his mum and he does not want to talk to her. This is a stereo-typical teenage attitude towards parents so the viewers can relate to the show.
-Lights
The lighting used throughout the show is normally high key lighting. This is to show that are enjoying their lives, but in one part of episode 1 they walk into a pub and low key lighting is used. The reason that they use this is to show that the pub is boring and gloomy and that it has a bit of a depressing atmosphere. This was used because they walked into the wrong pub.
-Sound In episode 1 of The Inbetweeners the majority of the sound that was used was a lot of non-digetic sound. For example during the scene were they are walking out of school their is upbeat music playing in the background. The reason that they use this is because it is the type of music that age group that would listen to that type of music and because they are leaving school they are happy that they are leaving school.
How are episodes structured?
The Inbetweeeners is a fictional realist comedy drama series, which uses single strand narrative. For example in episode 1 Will is trying to make friends with Simon, Jay and Neil and they are about to go into the Black Horse for a drink. The show is mostly in a linear structure because it is showing the events of his first day at school and what is happening during that day and it is all in chronological order.
How are scenes structured?
Most of the scenes start with Simon Bird (Will) narrating over the scene and then the scene starts with whatever the scene is. For example on the first episode that introduces the series Will is narrating why he is at a new school and then has a conversation with Mr. Gilbert and then the scene goes on then to end the scene he narrates again. This is the usual pattern throughout the series.
